There is a moment in the fourth season ofΒ Stranger Things, the one everyone remembers, the one that broke streaming records and resurrected a 1985 Kate Bush single into the Billboard Hot 100, where Sadie Sink’s character, Max Mayfield, runs.
She flees from death itself, through a landscape of crumbling and fading memory, with no motivation other than the sheer, unbearable desire to live, and a 3 chord synth riff. The sequence was seen more than a billion times. From the royalties, Kate Bush reportedly made a whopping $2.3 million in just one month.
However, less is said about the face than the performance. What Sink’s face does, in that order, which CGI can never do, and direction can never do, it holds terror and defiance in the same frame, simultaneously. That was 2022. Since then, Sink has graced the stage of the West End as Juliet, garnered a Tony nomination on Broadway, graced the screen opposite Brendan Fraser in an Oscar-winning film, and most recently, was announced as Jean Grey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
A Football Coach’s Daughter from Brenham, Texas
If there is a single detail that explains Sadie Sink’s career, the relentlessness of it, the discipline, the refusal to coast on charm alone, it is this: she was raised by a football coach.
Casey Adam Sink coached football in Brenham, a small Texas city roughly halfway between Houston and Austin where Friday night lights are close to religion than sport. Lori Elizabeth Sink, her mother, taught mathematics. The household was built on two pillars, athletic discipline and intellectual rigor, and whilenone of the five Sink children were destined for the gridiron, the values seeped into everything.
Sadie is the second-youngest of five:
| Family Member | Name | What They Do Now |
|---|---|---|
| Oldest Brother | Caleb Sink | Works in sports partnerships |
| Second Brother | Spencer Sink | Attorney |
| Third Brother | Mitchell Sink | Actor (Broadway; All Too Well: The Short Film) |
| Sadie | Sadie Elizabeth Sink | Actress |
| Youngest Sister | Jacey Sink | Actress (Stranger Things, The Whale) |
The performing instinct was early and blatant. Sadie and her brother Mitchell would recreate High School Musical in full in the living room, including the costumes and dances (BoredPanda). Sadie’s mom, however, knew there was more to it than just a kid’s game, so she enrolled her and her brother in acting classes in Houston when he was 7.
From there on, it was a decision that strikes a balance between supporting the child’s interest and taking a risk on the child’s talent. The Sinks, all seven of them, moved from Texas to New Jersey so that Sadie and Mitchell would be “close to New York City’s professional theater world.” Sadie has been homeschooled to suit the needs of her shows, auditions and rehearsals.
A family had to move across the world, when a little boy was able to act.The whole family life was disrupted when a seven-year-old boy could act. Either great faith or great awareness. It was both, in view of the fact that the following events unfolded.
Today two of the brothers, Caleb and Spencer, perform in a band called “Sink or Swim“, an intentionally or unintentionally apt name given to the family philosophy (Kahawa Tungu).

Ten Years Old and Already on Broadway: The Theater Years
Most people discovered Sadie Sink in 2017, when she walked into Stranger Things carrying a skateboard and an attitude. But by then, she had already spent half a decade on the most demanding stages in America.
The Annie Era (2012β2014)
Her first major part was in a Texas community theatre production of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. She followed with a spot on professional regional theater, in White Christmas (2011) and then in the role of Annie (2012) which led to a Broadway call.
At age ten, Sadie Sink joined the Broadway cast of Annie. She played it for eighteen months, eight shows a week, no editing room to fix a stumble, no safety net of a second take, and with live audiences (TV Guide). For comparison, most working adults are exhausted by eight shows a week. Sink went by the name of S. C. from 5th grade to 7th grade.
The Audience with Helen Mirren (2015)
She starred in the Broadway show The Audience as the young Queen Elizabeth II in 2015 with Helen Mirren (Wikipedia). She was thirteen. Helen Mirren was 69-years-old. The gap between these two numbers just provides the kind of challenge that either bends the young performer’s back or quickens his growth permanently.
It was the former for Sink. There’s never been a time when she mentioned it in public, and that’s because privacy was a Sink family trait, but there is proof in all the shows since. The allure is all-American, and the stillness, the feeling of being controlled, the refusal to push, can be traced directly back to sharing a stage with one of the greatest actresses alive.
Stranger Things and the Summer That Changed Everything
Sadie Sink joined the cast of the second season of Stranger Things in 2017, taking on the role of Max Mayfield, a skateboarding, arcade-game-dominating and tongue-twiddling newcomer to Hawkins, Ind.
The introduction of Max, however, was a more nuanced one, transforming her into a study in guarded vulnerability for Sink. The hard shell, the bad-temper, the competitive drive, the inability to explain herself, were all survival modes, rather than character traits. Season by season, and behind it, Sink exposed someone who was afraid, alone, and extremely courageous. It was the show’s most emotionally mature piece of work and people took to it.
